Our Research

Welcome to Florida Hebrew University's groundbreaking research initiative, where ancient wisdom meets modern science. Join us on a transformative journey exploring the impacts of Torah-based mitzvot on everyday life. Our unique study invites participants from diverse backgrounds to discover the enriching effects of these sacred practices. Together, we're uncovering the profound influence of traditional commandments in contemporary times.

Experimental Torah-based Research at FHU

At Florida Hebrew University, we are pioneering an innovative approach to understanding the impact of Torah-based mitzvot on individuals' lives, especially those who are not regularly engaged in these practices. Our research program seeks to explore the transformative potential of mitzvot through experimental studies.

The primary objective of this research is to empirically study the effects of Torah-based mitzvot on individuals who do not normally observe these commandments.  By inviting subjects from diverse backgrounds to participate in specific mitzvot for set periods, we aim to compare and analyze changes in various aspects of their lives, including mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being.

Methodology

  • Selection of Mitzvot: Identify specific mitzvot that are feasible for the participants to observe. These may include Shabbat observance, Kashrut adherence, daily prayers, or charity acts.

  • Participant Selection: Recruit a diverse group of Jews who do not observe Torah as well as potential members of Lost 10 tribes, ensuring a mix of individuals with varying levels of familiarity with Jewish practices.

  • Baseline Assessment: Conduct a comprehensive baseline assessment of participants' well-being, including psychological evaluations, quality of life surveys, and spiritual well-being metrics.

  • Intervention Phase: Instruct participants in the observance of selected mitzvot, providing necessary resources and support for successful practice.

  • Monitoring and Data Collection: Regularly monitor participants' adherence and collect data on their experiences, challenges, and reflections throughout the intervention period.

  • Post-Intervention Assessment: Conduct a follow-up assessment using the same metrics as the baseline to measure changes.

Expected Outcomes

This research aims to yield insights into how engagement with Torah-based mitzvot can influence individuals' lives, particularly in areas such as:

  • Psychological well-being and stress reduction

  • Sense of community and social connectedness

  • Spiritual growth and fulfillment

  • Overall life satisfaction and personal development

Potential Applications

The findings from this research could have wide-ranging applications, including:

  • Enhancing Jewish educational programs by providing empirical evidence of the benefits of mitzvot observance

  • Informing community outreach initiatives to engage non-observant Jews and Hebrews

  • Contributing to interfaith dialogue by sharing the universal values and benefits found in Torah-based practices

Conclusion

Through this experimental Torah-based research, Florida Hebrew University aims to bridge the gap between ancient wisdom and modern scientific inquiry, fostering a deeper understanding of the timeless relevance and benefits of Jewish traditions.
